Sabah gets RM157.14 mln for planting, replanting programs Posted: 19 Aug 2014 12:27 AM PDT KOTA KINABALU: Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities has allocated RM157.14 million to smallholders to undertake new planting and replanting of natural rubber, oil palm, pepper and cocoa in Sabah this year. Its minister Datuk Seri Douglas Uggah Embas said of the total, RM72 million has been approved for new planting and replanting of oil palm, RM59.7 million for natural rubber, RM18 million for cocoa, RM42,000 for new pepper plantations and RM7.4 million for the building of estate roads. "I am satisfied with the reports by the Sabah Rubber Industry Board, Rubber Industry Smallholder Development Authority and the Malaysian Palm Oil Board which are the agencies charged with the task of developing these respective industries. "I thank the Sabah Rubber Industry Board which has undertaken the planting and replanting programmes in Sabah. We hope the programmes will help increase the income stream for smallholders in the state," he told reporters after visiting the Kabang Rubber Nursery in Papar here yesterday. Last year, Uggah said the minister allocated RM226.8 million to fund various programmes and to provide incentives to rubber, oil palm, cocoa and pepper smallholders in Sabah. He said between 2011 and 2013, 39 estate road projects stretching 159.4 kilometres, costing RM33.9 million, were built in Sabah. On government assistance to help rubber smallholders tide over sluggish rubber prices, he said those registered with Risda and the Sabah Rubber Industry Board were eligible to receive financial aid after fulfilling certain conditions. "I hope there will be no more confusion on this matter," he added. — Bernama Source: Bernama (2014, August 19). Sabah gets RM157.14 mln for planting, replanting programs. The Borneo Post, p. A20. Sabah State Govt Takes Steps To Arrest Decline In Rubber Price Posted: 31 Jul 2014 12:50 AM PDT TUARAN, July 18 (Bernama) — The Sabah state government is taking steps to assist rubber smallholders, apart from providing a special assistance, to overcome the current fall in the price of the commodity. Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin said the decline at the moment was universal and unrelated to the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) or the loss of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370. "The truth is, the rubber price is influenced by supply and global demand. "The fall in the rubber price is not just in Sabah or peninsular Malaysia, but in all producer countries in the world such as Thailand, Indonesia, India and Vietnam," he told reporters here after presenting the special assistance. At the same ceremony, 323 rubber tappers also received the special aid. Yahya, who is also the Agriculture and Food Industry Minister, said Malaysia was the fifth largest producer of natural rubber globally with an annual production of 845,000 metric tonnes. "At present, supply is exceeding demand and this has caused the rubber price to plunge. The price of rubber in the international market is beyond the control of the government," he added. He said 27,607 smallholders in Sabah were registered with the Sabah Rubber Industry Board (LIGS) involving 77,737 hectares. Yahya said 2,042 smallholders registered with the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority(RISDA) had been given financial assistance of RM1,021,000, as of July 3. "LIGS and RISDA are actively cooperating to provide information on this, circulating forms, alongside registering smallholders and rubber tappers in the state," he added. He said from August 2012, the state government was still continuing with its Rubber Production Incentive of 50 sen for every kilogramme of cured rubber produced by the smallholders. He said the incentive scheme is to encourage smallholders to indulge in Good Agricultural Practices to enhance rubber yields and streamline the price between Sabah and the peninsular. — BERNAMA Source: http://www.bernama.com/bernama/v7/newsindex.php?id=1049873, 31 July 2014 Information in this page was last updated on 31 July, 2014. |
